Contemporary art exhibits, one-time only art performances and site-specific installations are certain to awaken one’s senses when ArtSoBay opens on Saturday, February 18 at the Deering Estate at Cutler. Uniquely alternative experiences are created for the viewer when sound, taste, smelland touch are integrated into the artists’ messages. The unconventional day and evening art event is a highlight of the annual SoBay Festival of the Arts, a two-week celebration (February 14-26) of visual, literary, and performing art collaborations.

The day begins with Thomas Daniel Burnikel, a Deering Estate Artist in Residence, leading a morning Art Take Away Workshop at 11:00 am, where visitors use their own cameras to explore and create images that are inspired by the historic property and its’ natural surroundings. An exhibition of contemporary works by artists from each of the LegalArt and Deering Estate residency programsdebuts in the Stone House and Richmond Cottage.

While on-going musical vignettes are performed inside the Ballroom, outdoors in the boat basin artist Pioneer Winter performs his piece Ebb/ Flow, at 3:00 pm, 3:45 pm and 4:30 pm. “ Floating upon a canoe the surrounding water will become a metaphor based upon the ebb and flow of romantic relationships,” explained Winter.

Participating artists from the Deering Estate are: Visual Arts - Lucas Blanco, Thomas Daniel, Bernadette Denoux, Lucinda Linderman, Aurora Molina and Christina Pettersson; Literary Arts - Deena Blazejack and C.M. Clark. Dominique Breard, LegalArt Program Director has curated the LegalArt portion with their artists including: Justin Broadbent, Pachi Giustinian, Jiae Hwang, Julia Blaukopf, Brookhart Jonquil, Manny Prieres, TM Sisters and Pioneer Winter. The exhibit runs through Saturday, March 10th at the Deering Estate at Cutler.

Artist Dinorah De Jesus Rodriguez, whose alternate cinema project is incorporated with the lush mango grove that lines the Deering Estate path, greets guests at ArtSoBay Event Night. The evening also brings together this community’s most notable artists, whose works are featured in the groundbreaking exhibit, Wedding Crashers. “This outdoor show has site-specific installations that go beyond traditional art spaces,” said Ralph Provisero Special Projects Curator. “When I curated this show, my intention was to select artists that I thought would respond to a given area by creating an altered space through an alternate sense of reality. A space with a sense of time in play, of something happened, happening or about to happen.” Wedding Crashers artists include: Rene Barge, Bhakti Baxter, Felecia Chizuko Carlisle, Robert Chambers, Clifton Childree, William Cordova, Jason Hedges, Michael Loveland, Cheryl Pope, Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova, Frances Trombly and Wendy Wischer.

Provisero says that weddings can be iconic images of momentary time. “The preparation, the party and the aftermath are often based on grandiose images of fantasy or skewed reality. With the Deering Estate being such a popular wedding destination, these art installations, though curated for the spaces they occupy, are wedding crashers - uninvited witnesses that nonetheless embody a presence as fantastical as their surroundings.”

The evening also featureson-going performance art: Contact with Rene Barge and the transformation of sound with crowd participation, Lucinda Linderman Excess Extravagance, Jason Hedges Vertical Spits and C.M. Clark presenting a poetry reading. There is an informal reception with an opportunity to meet all of the artists and curators. ArtSoBay Event Night runs from 6:30pm to10pm and there is no admission charge.
