Living Artist Concert Series "Voices through the Oceans"

For music enthusiasts, the Deering Estate Chamber Ensemble presents superb concerts intimately set in the historic Stone House Ballroom. Internationally acclaimed musicians collaborate with world-renowned guest composers, artists, and talented youth performers as part of the Deering Estate at Cutler’s “Living Artist Concert Series.”

The November 18th concert, “Voices through the Oceans,” will feature Guest Composer Juraj Kojs and the Deering Estate Chamber Ensemble. Enjoy works by Dvorak, Hummel and Jindrich Feld. 

Guest Composer Juraj Kojs:
Juraj Kojs is a Slovakian composer, performer, multimedia artist, producer, and educator residing in the US. Kojs' compositions were recently featured at festivals and conferences in Europe, Asia and the Americas. Players who performed Kojs’ music include Tomoko Mukaiyama, Blair McMillen, Margaret Lancaster, Madeleine Shapiro, Laura Wilcox, Michael Straus, Susan Fancher, Eugen Prochac, Canticum Ostrava, Atticus Brass Quintet, IKTUS Percussion Quartet, The Quiet Music Ensemble, Ensemble s21, Cassatt String Quartet, The Now Ensemble and Yale Gamelan Suprabanggo.

His compositions received awards at Eastman Electroacoustic Composition and Performance Competition and the Digital Art Award. Kojs’ muscle-powered multimedia Neraissance described as “striking and unforgettable,” received the Best Art Performance 2010 Award from Miami New Times. Kojs has received commissions from The Quiet Music Ensemble, Miami Light Project and Meet the Composer. His research articles appeared in journals such as Organized Sound, Digital Creativity, Leonardo Music Journal, and Journal of New Music Research.

Juraj Kojs is the director of Foundation for Music Technologies (FETA) in Miami, FL where he has managed the monthly 12 Nights of Electronic Music and Art concert series. Kojs holds a PhD. in Composition and Computer Technologies from University of Virginia. Between September 2008 and May 2010, Kojs was a Postdoctoral Associate in Music Technology and Multimedia Art at Yale’s Department of Music. In the fall 2010, Juraj Kojs was a visiting lecturer at University of Virginia, teaching an undergraduate class in songwriting and graduate courses in enaction and composition. Kojs currently teaches courses in audio production at Miami International University of Art and Design.

The Deering Estate Chamber Ensemble is comprised of founding members: Jose R. Lopez, piano (Coordinator of Keyboard Studies, Florida International University), Ross Harbaugh, cello (University of Miami), Scott Flavin, violin, (University of Miami) and Laura Wilcox, viola (Greater Miami Youth Symphony artistic staff). This ensemble came together out of a mutual respect for nature and the beautiful Deering Estate with a love to perform chamber music, work with living composers, and interact with, history, nature and other art forms. Thanks to The Deering Estate Foundation, Inc. and Miami-Dade Parks this ensemble has been able to fulfill a unique partnership with The Deering Estate at Cutler. From different parts of the Americas and sharing in vast musical experiences worldwide, The Deering Estate Ensemble brings its audiences diverse listening experiences. The ensemble is also committed to teaching young musicians and present public master-classes throughout the season. Commencing their fifth season The Deering Estate Chamber Ensemble has received awards from the Met-Life Foundation/Meet the Composer and Miami-Dade Cultural Affairs. This season the ensemble has performed in different venues in Miami-Dade County and in the Spring of 2012 they will be featured in the ‘Cutting Edge’ Concert Series in New York City. The Deering Estate Chamber Ensemble performed LIVE on 91.3 WLRN South Florida's Art Beat on Friday, October 2, 2009.

A meet-the-artist reception is held at 6:30 pm prior to the concert. The concerts begin at 7:15 pm.
