Archeology Program

The Deering Estate's Archeology Program offers participants the opportunity to learn about the past and create a sense of cultural awareness. Our education and interpretive staff will take the group to the classroom for a short introduction on the basic principles of archeology, techniques, and safety issues. Students will spend time digging for artifacts at our archeological site, while learning about the Tequesta and Seminole Indians, as well as the early settlers of South Dade.

Students will have a chance to use techniques that are commonly used by archeologists as they unearth relics such as pottery, shards tools, animal bones, and shark teeth - some dating back as far as 3,000 years!

In addition to the dig, students can visit one of the few remaining Tequesta burial mounds in
Miami-Dade County. This highlights the entire experience and helps participants make a direct
connection to the past. Through the Archeology Program at the Deering Estate, students can
gain a better appreciation for anicient cultures and their legacy.
