Core Curriculum

The Deering Estate at Cutler offers on-site and off-site (reverse tour), interdisciplinary and interactive programming for all age and ability groups.

Our on site Living Classroom provides a hands-on curriculum to community youth in the field of ecology, geology, marine biology, archaeology, history and art.  The program’s main goal is to make learning fun.  The Deering Estate's Educational & Interpretative staff partners with local environmental, preservation and cultural community groups to bring an award wining program to our community's youth.

Our off-site, Reverse Tour Program complements a school's formal education within an after school program setting and provides students with a chance to apply classroom material to real-life situations.  The Deering Estate's Educational & Interpretative staff will go to your private or public school with fossils, artifacts and tools, preserved specimens, photographs and simple laboratory experiments and activities to help illustrate the key points of a specific topic. The program will accommodate up to 30 students and is offered once a week for 30 weeks during an academic year.  Each weekly program is 2 hours in length.  The curriculum is offered primarily to elementary age and skill levels but can be tailored to other age and ability levels as needed.

All programs are correlated to the Sunshine State Standards and are FCAT compatible.  They engage participants in an interactive, positive and balanced activity to help them understand and appreciate as well as think critically about the world around them.

Groups of twenty (20) or more visitors qualify for discounted admission.  We require a ratio of one (1) adult chaperone for every ten (10) children.  The Estate can also be used as the backdrop for your own self-guided activity.

Our Royal Palm Grove Picnic Area is open for lunch. Deering Estate Staff will gladly transport your coolers into the park for you. Please be aware of raccoons that frequently visit this area. These animals may behave unpredictably and/or aggressively. For your safety and for the welfare of the animals, do not allow members of your group to attempt to feed, pet, or approach wildlife during your visit.
